Russia says it might take additional nuclear deterrence steps if US places missiles in Europe/Asia

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia might take additional steps within the space of nuclear deterrence if the USA deploys intermediate and short-range missiles in Europe and Asia, Russian International Minister Sergei Lavrov instructed the state RIA information company in an interview.
RIA referred to U.S. plans, introduced in April, to deploy missiles within the Indo-Pacific area in response to what Washington sees as rising Chinese language militarisation.
Such deployments would have beforehand been outlawed underneath the landmark 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia which the USA formally withdrew from in 2019 after saying that Moscow was violating the accord, an accusation the Kremlin denied.
Moscow has lengthy warned it will scrap a moratorium it proposed after the treaty lapsed on the deployment of quick and medium vary missiles if Washington went forward with plans to deploy such missiles in Asia and Europe.
Lavrov instructed RIA that Russia may need to take different steps too.
“We don’t rule out extra steps within the sphere of nuclear deterrence, as a result of our command centres and the areas of our nuclear forces shall be in vary of American forward-based missiles,” mentioned Lavrov.
